For students interested in pursuing both a Ph.D. in speech or language sciences and clinical training:
Our department provides two options for students interested in pursuing both a Ph.D. in speech or language sciences and clinical training (with the associated MA degree).
- First, students can opt to pursue an MA degree first and then apply to the PhD program upon completion of the MA. This may be the best option for students who are uncertain as to whether they wish to continue for the PhD degree, because the MA degree is completed in the least amount of time. However, the PhD degree may itself take longer than it would in a combined program, and requires a sharp change in focus between years 2 and 3 of graduate study.
- For students who are certain they wish to pursue a PhD, we allow students to apply for the PhD program and receive an MA degree along the way. This allows for maximum efficiency overall, and permits students to pursue both research and clinical training simultaneously, rather than sequentially. A sample course sequence for this combined program is available here. Students interested in a combined course of study should apply to the Ph.D. program initially, but should indicate their interest in pursuing clinical training in their statement of purpose.
