Position
The researchers will work with Dr. Matthew Goupell (UMCP) and Dr. Ronna Hertzano (UMB), as well as other auditory neuroscience researchers at both institutions, including those in the Center for Comparative Evolutionary Biology of Hearing (CCEBH, https://www.ccebh.umd.edu/) Responsibilities may include perception testing, audiological/clinical testing, cochlear-implant programming at both UMB and UMCP, as well as administrative duties to perform joint research projects and help with grant writing. Background/experience in genetics or electrophysiology is not necessary, but would be a bonus.
Qualifications
A successful applicant should have a PhD, AuD, or other comparable doctoral degree. The doctoral degree should be in hearing science, communicative disorders, engineering, and/or other related fields. The researcher should be detail oriented and highly organized. Background/experience in genetics or electrophysiology is not necessary, but would be a bonus; Preference will be given to those who have a good mix of research, clinical, and administrative skills.
About the Department
The mission of the Department of Hearing & Speech Sciences is to provide state-of-the-art teaching, research, and
clinical services in the areas of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology. Our department is recognized as one of the
top-ranked Graduate Programs by U.S. News and World Report (America's Best Graduate Schools 2017). Our program is
ranked 17th and our speech-language pathology program is ranked 20th. Both programs are in the top 10% of graduate
programs in the discipline nationwide. The Department's Hearing and Speech Clinic provides speech, language, and
hearing services for individuals with communication disorders across the life span. The Audiology clinic’s current services,
include diagnostic audiologic evaluations, fitting of hearing aids and assistive technology, cochlear implant mapping and
follow-up, tinnitus evaluation and management, and auditory processing evaluations. The clinic includes a Language-
Learning Early-Advantage Program (LEAP), which offers communication enrichment for children between the ages of
three and five and especially welcomes children with speech and/or language delays only or children learning English as
a second language.
