The Language Diversity Initiative was developed at the University of Maryland, College Park, in the department of Hearing & Speech Sciences. As a community of bilingual service providers, we are equally as responsible for quality service delivery as we are for inter-professional education and advocacy. The goals that we set out to achieve are:
- To educate all clinicians with essential information on relevant topics in our field related to bilingual service delivery.
- To foster the development and growth of relationships within our bilingual community.
- The improve the quality of service delivery to underrepresented communities.
Qualified bilingual service providers are in demand in the US, and this need is perpetually growing. For those individuals who embark on the path to becoming a qualified bilingual speech-language pathologist, you will be rewarded with a highly specialized skill set and a seemingly endless demand for the services that you provide. The training required to develop the requisite skills comes from specialized education, professional guidance, and experience.
In an effort to provide clinicians with the requisite tools to serve as qualified bilingual service providers, we have established the Language Diversity Initiative in the field of Speech-Language Pathology. This project is intended to provide a means of engagement, discussion, and sharing of information among our community of bilingual clinicians.
