OVERVIEW
About the Self-Study Program
The self-study continuing education program hosted by the University of Maryland allows you to earn ASHA CEUs in the comfort of your own home, in your own time, at your own pace, and, moreover, at a price well below that of conferences and many other journal CE programs! Each carefully edited issue tackles a specific clinical concept or population for in-depth coverage of current best practices in the field.
Self-study credits are available through Seminars in Speech and Language (Thieme) -- Available for ASHA Continuing Education Units
Rates start at just $50!
To learn more about this self-study program, look through the materials on this page or contact us.
Obtaining CEUs Through Self-Study
- Obtain the journal issue(s) you wish to read. You are not required to subscribe to these journals to participate in the CEU program, although you must obtain access to the journal issues. We do not provide copies of the journals. The journals may be available through a local or university library. Electronic subscriptions for Thieme journals are also available for individuals and libraries.
- Complete the questions at the end of each issue and fax or send them to the Department of Hearing & Speech Sciences. (see mail/fax information below). Ask us about an alumni discount.
- Include the CEU handling charge with your submission. The handling charge covers issues from the same volume.
Find An Eligible Journal Issue On ASHA's Website
In a hurry to locate a CEU activity for self-study? Try these steps:
- Go to the ASHA Course Search site
- Search Seminars in Speech
- For location, pick Distance Learning.
- For the most selection and widest availability of topics, end dates, and CE values, do NOT put in any subject terms.
- Search! You will find a description of all eligible journal issues, their general content, and total CE value when completed. Use the other links on our site to obtain copies of the issue if you do not have ready access to any of these journals.
Current Rates:
- Seminars in Speech and Language: $50 for [up to] 2 issues reported to ASHA, $90 for [up to] 4 issues reported to ASHA
- All participants must include their ASHA numbers on all submissions. Social security numbers will no longer be accepted.
- Processing of your CEU questions and fees can be by mail/check or credit card through our secure payment site for your convenience. Our department staff will then grade your answers and process your CEUs.
- Mail submission information can be found here.
Payment
We prefer that payments be made through our secure website. Please do NOT send credit card info by fax or email. We cannot process these submissions. Please use our secure payment portal to process credit cards.

Expected Processing Time
Our goal for processing all submissions is 48 hours.
- Please be advised that we are located on a University Campus, and that state-mandated holidays and breaks may make it difficult to meet this turnaround, especially around the time of December and March breaks, when our staff is reduced.
- In addition, growing numbers of CE applicants attempt to submit materials only days (sometimes hours!) before their license renewals are due. Please be advised that we CANNOT GUARANTEE that certificates will be delivered in time, if they arrive to us LESS THAN SEVEN DAYS before your filing deadline. If you have a licensure deadline or other emergency, you should notify us ahead of time, preferably by email (see contact information below) so that we can attempt to meet your needs. Participants may fax materials at any time for processing.
All certificates will be dated, for CEU completion purposes, by the date received by our offices by fax or mail, not the date they are marked; thus, if you submit an activity electronically on December 31, it will be recorded as completed by that date. If you send an activity by mail in late December that cannot be delivered to our offices until January 2, your certificate will be issued to reflect the January date.

NOTICE ON PROCESSING TIME FOR CEU MATERIALS: Our goal for processing all submissions is 48 hours. HOWEVER, please be advised that we are located on a University Campus, and that state-mandated holidays and breaks may make it difficult to meet this turnaround, especially around the time of December and March breaks, when our staff is reduced. In addition, growing numbers of CE applicants attempt to submit materials only days (sometimes hours!) before their license renewals are due. You must answer 80% of the questions correctly to pass the journal activity. If you do not answer enough questions correctly, we will notify you immediately and give you additional opportunities to answer the questions that you missed. Please note: We do not write the questions; they are submitted by journal authors (in other words, please don't kill the messenger if you need to retake questions). If you have concerns about the nature of questions or answers that are considered correct, please let us know, and we will pass this information on to the journal editors.
You will receive a dated certificate (delivered as e-mail attachment or by surface mail), indicating the specific date that we marked your CEU forms. This date is the one you may use in reporting to state and local agencies when reporting your annual CEU activities.
If you are a member of the ASHA, we will send your CE reports on a monthly basis.
The CE registries that we report to ASHA require some way to identify you. For ASHA, we need your ASHA number. This is to ensure that there are no mix-ups or delays in getting your activity posted accurately to the registries. If you do not know your ASHA number, please call their action line at 800-498-2071 or write to actioncenter [at] asha.org.
Each journal issue is typically approved for five years of CE activity. For example, all 2020 issues of our journals are available for CE study through 2025. When you complete a 2018 issue in 2021, your CE completion date will show as 2021: the date you completed the activity, not the date of the issue.
If you have a question regarding the validity of a certain journal activity, please hesp_ceu [at] umd.edu (contact the CE Assistant).
The CEU handling charge is paid once per journal volume and applies to any of the journals that we administer (currently, Seminars in Hearing and Seminars in Speech and Language). This means you pay this charge once to complete the activities in any particular volume, regardless of the calendar year that the activity is completed in. For example, you may pay $90 for participating in the 2020 quarterly issues of Seminars in Speech and Language. For this price, you may complete all four issues, for all available CEUs, or only a portion of them. Unfortunately, if you do not complete all four issues, we do not refund a portion of your registration fee. Also, you may not mix journal years. If you do activities from both the 2019 and 2020 volumes of a journal, for example, you must submit two separate registration forms and fees. Charges cover our paperwork in getting the issue approved for CE credit, processing your test questions, issuing you a certificate of completion and sending your paperwork to appropriate registries.
Our processing charges are much lower than those of most other journals for the numbers of CEUs you may obtain and are a tremendous savings over onsite conferences and workshops. However, processing and registry reporting of journal CEUs is very paper intensive and does require us to charge you appropriately.
Yes! You may register and pay the annual charge at any point (even in December!), and then complete any of the journal year issues, in any order. Just make sure the volume has not expired. Each journal issue is typically approved for five years of CE activity. If you have a question regarding the validity of a certain journal activity, please hesp_ceu [at] umd.edu (contact the CE Assistant).
There are a number of ways to contact us if you have a question about your CE activities. The best and fastest way tends to be e-mail, which we monitor virtually 24/7, regardless of University schedules. You may contact Nan Ratner (nratner [at] umd.edu) or the CE Assistant if you have questions or wish to inquire about the status of submitted activities. You may also fax us at 301-314-2023, or call at 301-405-7361 and leave a voice mail. To facilitate us, please be sure to indicate your full name, the Journal you are self-studying, the issue number you are inquiring about, and the nature of your question. We will return your query promptly.
