Speech
"My character and value of dedication strengthened because of my articulation errors. All 52 Tuesdays of the year, I would wake up at 6am to go to speech therapy. From the time I was able to talk, my speech always sounded off, but everyone thought this was because I was young, and it could be easily fixed...My speech therapy was at the University of Maryland Speech and Hearing Clinic with Ms. Mont and the student-clinicians. I could have quit and still have major articulation errors, but I did not give up...Speech therapy taught me dedication." - "My mother has participated in speech and language therapy here for over a decade. She acquired profound aphasia (difficulty using and understanding language) and apraxia (difficulty using the articulators of the mouth) after a massive stroke. The Speech and Hearing Clinic has been one of the most important tools for improving her quality of life. Every semester the enthusiastic and inventive student clinicians work hard to expand her communication and problem solving skills. The supervisors are smart, caring, and flexible--overall amazing guides for both her and the students working with her. They do everything to make attending the clinic work for us.
Not only has my mother's language improved significantly through group and individual sessions, she feels a sense of purpose by helping the students learn. We've made friends with other participants and their families as well. Mom's insurance stopped covering speech therapy long ago. Paying privately for therapy from working speech-language pathologists is prohibitively expensive. The lower-cost sessions at UMD have made all the difference in our lives."
Audiology
"I have been going to the Hearing Clinic at the University of Maryland since I have been wearing hearing aids, approximately 15 years maybe more. I have seen several audiologists over the years and have been generally pleased. I am especially pleased with my current audiologist, Lisa Rickard. She is a great listener and makes sure you understand everything. I see her annually for a full check up, but also when I have a problem. The location is great and provides special parking just outside the building. I would give the clinic a 5 star rating. This also includes the receptionists they have had over the years."
- "I had my four year old's hearing checked at the clinic. I was very happy with the experience. The graduate clinician did a wonderful job making my daughter feel comfortable. The supervising Audiologist was there the entire time and available for questions. Scheduling the appointment was no problem."
