Title: Translation Services in Hospital Setting and Diagnostic/Treatment of Bilingual Populations.

Abstract: A growing U.S. population is bilingual, and they speak more than one language on a regular basis. Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) in both geriatric and pediatric hospital settings encounter bilingual populations every day. According to the ASHA Code of Ethics, providing culturally and linguistically appropriate services is under our scope of practice. However, currently the field of speech-language pathology lacks bilingual clinicians who have necessary clinical expertise to diagnose and treat those populations. When bilingual SLPs are not available, translation services can be used instead. For this presentation, currently available translation services in hospital settings will be reviewed with emphasis on diagnostic and treatment of bilingual population.

Title: Language, poverty, and the achievement gap in CLD students

Abstract: This presentation aims to help clarify what we mean when we talk about 'the achievement gap' among culturally- and linguistically-diverse (CLD) students in the United States. Themes and key findings from human development and child language research will be presented that highlight the multidimensional experience of poverty and the challenges of isolating its effects on language development, school readiness, and academic achievement.
