The Language Science Center is pleased to host a screening of Talking Black in America, followed by a Q&A with the executive producer, sociolinguist Walt Wolfram.
Doors open at 4:30pm. The film (66 minutes) will be introduced at 5pm. Q&A with Walt Wolfram (moderated by Sheri Parks) will begin immediately following the film.
The status of African American speech has been controversial for more than a half-century now, suffering from persistent public misunderstanding, linguistic profiling, and language-based discrimination. we wanted to address that and, on a fundamental level, make clear tha tunderstanding African American speech is absolutely critical to understanding the way we talk today.
