The Literacy Emphasis Program (LEP) is a specialty track designed to prepare graduate students with the knowledge and skills needed to support literacy development in educational and clinical settings. Grounded in the Science of Reading, the LEP integrates evidence-based practices in reading, writing, and language to provide a comprehensive and practical training experience. Students selected for the LEP receive additional academic and clinical opportunities beyond the requirements of their degree program. Through specialized coursework and hands-on experiences, students develop expertise in assessing and supporting individuals with language-based learning differences, including dyslexia and other reading and writing challenges.

A key feature of the LEP is guided preparation toward professional credentialing. Students are coached through the process of becoming a Certified Structured Literacy Classroom Teacher through the International Dyslexia Association, equipping them with recognized, high-quality training in structured literacy practices. The program also emphasizes interprofessional learning, with students completing an elective course within the College of Education. This experience strengthens collaboration with educators and deepens understanding of classroom-based literacy instruction and intervention. Upon completion of the program, graduates are prepared to implement structured, evidence-based literacy practices and to support strong reading and writing outcomes for the children and families they serve.

Applications are due on January 15.
