The University of Maryland has appointed Dr. Wade C. Jacobsen as its next Graduate Student Ombuds Officer, effective January 5, 2026.
Dr. Jacobsen is an associate professor and director of graduate studies in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice and has been a UMD faculty member since 2017. He has held several leadership roles across the university, including co-director of the undergraduate honors program in criminology and criminal justice and acting associate director of the Maryland Population Research Center. His research focuses on how youth behavior is shaped by social networks and institutional systems, with publications in leading journals such as American Sociological Review, Criminology, and Sociology of Education. He also brings a strong background in community and volunteer service, including work supporting conflict mediation and individuals in need of advocacy.
As Graduate Student Ombuds Officer, Dr. Jacobsen will serve as a confidential, impartial, and independent resource for graduate students seeking guidance on concerns or conflicts related to their university experience. The role is designed to help students explore options, understand policies, and resolve issues informally when possible, while promoting fairness, respect, and open communication.
Dr. Jacobsen will join the Ombuds team in the Office of the President and work closely with the Faculty and Staff Ombuds Officers, The Graduate School, and partners across campus. His appointment follows the dedicated service of Dr. Mark Shayman and the interim support provided by Simone Warrick-Bell, Dr. Evelyn Cooper, and Dr. Jason Farman.
