Avoidance Reduction Therapy for Stuttering (ARTS®) Workshop
Between April 20-22, 2023, the most recent Avoidance Reduction Therapy for Stuttering (ARTS®) Workshop took place at a beautiful farm venue – Hennessy Creek in Brandywine, MD. This 2 ½ day cooperative course, offered by the University of Maryland Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences and the Sisskin Stuttering Center, hosted participants from across the U.S., Europe, and South America.
This workshop is designed for those with a solid understanding of stuttering and stuttering therapy approaches. Instruction was provided by stuttering experts and 18 client-mentors (adults, teens, and parents). This model of participatory professional development promotes learning through lecture, story- telling, and small group discussion. The value of multiple perspectives in clinical education was celebrated by all!
Avoidance Reduction Therapy for Stuttering (ARTS©) is a powerful approach to stuttering therapy based on the pioneering work of Dr. Joseph Sheehan and Vivian Sisskin. ARTS© therapy is targeted towards clients interested in a group experience, focusing on increasing speech efficiency and spontaneity, developing confidence and empowerment as a person who stutters, and ultimately, living fully into the joy of communication.
