Congratulations to senior Jessica Nolasco for receiving the Jennifer F. Lewis Memorial Award and the Carolina Rojas-Bahr Award!
The Jennifer F. Lewis Memorial Award was created to honor one of our formal scholars who lost a six-year battle to breast cancer in 2008 after a remarkable but brief life. Jennifer showed academic prowess and was also involved in campus life and deeply committed to social justice and civil rights issues; she wanted to make them her life's work.
Each year, a senior who captures her spirit is recognized. This award is given to a student who has made an impression on the Incentive Awards Community -- a student with impeccable character who demonstrates exemplary behavior and who embodies the ideals of the program as Jennifer did. This year, Jessica Nolasco was named as the recipient of this honor.
Jessica is highly regarded by faculty, staff, and students for her work as a research assistant in multiple language laboratories, her campus involvement, and extensive volunteerism while at Maryland. In the Incentive Awards Program, she was on the Community Development Council and is currently a Fellow, a leadership position created for model students.
The Carolina Rojas-Bahr Award for Outstanding Latina/o Undergraduate is given to students nominated because of their accomplishments during their college career; an outstanding academic record, contributions to the quality of campus life, exceptional community service involvement or contributions as a student employee. The award is named in honor of the incomparable work of our friend and advisor, Carolina Rojas-Bahr.
