Reaching All Students: An active-learning approach to infusing diversity, equity, and inclusion in the curriculum

On May 12, Reaching All Students: An active-learning approach to infusing diversity, equity, and inclusion in the curriculum, a project by Associate Clinical Professor Eusebia Mont and her team, was presented at a poster session for the 2023 Innovations in Teaching and Learning Conference.

With the support of the Teaching and Learning Transformation Center, Professor Mont and her team worked on a project that focused on cultivating and implementing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion activities into the HESP undergraduate courses. With an active learning approach, the purpose of the project was to incorporate as many diverse perspectives into the classrooms as possible, ultimately contributing to a positive cultural change within the field of Hearing and Speech Sciences and beyond.

Abstract:

The Department of Hearing and Speech Science's mission includes fostering a culture of inclusion that values diversity and seeks to support individuals from all cultures, backgrounds, ethnicities, abilities, and sexual orientations—in our Department as well as our professions. We recognize that the creation of an inclusive climate starts in the classroom. Our students conduct clinical service and research to improve communication and hearing health in individuals across the lifespan with varying abilities and cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Therefore, we must instill in our students a mindset that seamlessly includes these considerations in our classes. To this end, we seek to conduct an entire overhaul of our courses to integrate diverse perspectives and positively change the cultural climate, using an active-learning approach.
