About NBASLH
The National Black Association for Speech-Language and Hearing (NBASLH) is the leading professional and scientific organization focused on the communication interests and concerns of Black communication sciences and disorders (CSD) professionals, students, and the communities they serve. For more than 45 years, NBASLH has worked to strengthen representation in the field, advance culturally responsive care, and advocate for equity in speech, language, and hearing.
NBASLH’s work centers on increasing the number of Black speech-language pathology and audiology professionals; supporting Black students through mentorship and financial resources; and promoting research that improves how communication disorders and differences are identified, diagnosed, and treated within Black communities. The association also serves as an advocate for Black individuals with communication disorders and differences, and shares information with the public to increase awareness and improve outcomes.
NBASLH is committed to building a profession where excellence and equity go hand in hand. Through collaboration, mentorship, advocacy, and research, NBASLH helps ensure that Black voices are heard, Black professionals are supported, and Black communities receive high-quality, respectful, evidence-informed services.
Faculty Advisor: Dr. Courtney Overton (coverton [at] umd.edu">coverton [at] umd.edu) serves as the faculty advisor for the UMD HESP NBASLH chapter, providing guidance and support to student leaders as they plan programming, build community, and advance the chapter’s goals.
Mission Statement
NBASLH advances equity in speech, language, and hearing sciences by empowering underrepresented students, supporting research, and increasing access to resources and outreach that improves awareness and outcomes for diverse communities.
Membership Requirements
- Be an Undergraduate or Graduate Student of the University of Maryland community interested in learning, promoting and supporting speech, language and hearing communication disorders.
