Abstract:
With the increasing prevalence of bilateral cochlear implantation, it would be ideal to restore binaural sensitivity and capabilities to that near those with typical hearing. However, most bilateral cochlear implant users fall far short in binaural capabilities, even with the most controlled stimuli. One factor affecting this may be unequal insertion depths of the implants, which would cause interaural frequency mismatch. We will discuss perceptual experiments examining the importance of interaural frequency matching in utilizing interaural time and level differences for sound localization, as well as interaural decorrelation which is related to the binaural unmasking of speech in noisy situations.
