Matthew Goupell

Associate Professor

In my research field of interest, psychological acoustics, I am involved in several disciplines including physics, electrical engineering, neurophysiology, and psychology. My appreciation for interdisciplinary thinking began during my undergraduate studies at Hope College, one of the best schools for undergraduate research in the nation. My training in physics and electrical engineering has become very useful in my field as I can easily perform necessary digital signal processing and design experimental software to perform efficient and interesting psychoacoustical experiments. My current research objectives are to continue in the field of cochlear implants (CIs) with an emphasis on sound localization and binaural speech unmasking with adult bilateral CI users. This research combines the work of my previous post doctoral work on spatial hearing in CI users with my dissertation work on incoherence detection and binaural detection of signals in noise. My long-term research objectives are to continue in the field of binaural hearing in general, with an emphasis on sound localization, binaural speech unmasking, and physiological binaural modeling. This will include both CI users and normal-hearing individuals.

I am a member of the Neuroscience and Cognitive Science Program (NACS), the Center for the Comparative Evolutionary Biology of Hearing (C-CEBH), and the Maryland Language Science Center (LSC).
