Hearing impairment is a major public health issue, with roughly 20% of Americans having some degree of hearing loss. These numbers are even greater among senior citizens. Unaddressed hearing loss can lead people to withdraw from social activities, become depressed, and develop a number of related health concerns. The Department of Hearing & Speech Sciences is collaborating with Riderwood, a senior living community, to educate residents on strategies for managing hearing loss, provide hearing screenings and evaluations, and offer aural rehabilitation therapy.
