This research explores processing differences between infants being raised in monolingual and bilingual environments. Specifically, this project examines infants’ ability to recognize known words in the presence of distracters, to learn new auditory information in the presence of distracting vs. supporting visual information, and to switch attention from one information source to a previously-ignored source. Finally, as a means towards achieving these research goals, this project aims to develop a standardized, multi-paradigm infant testing system that can be used in multiple sites both reliably and uniformly, and make it available to other researchers. In collaboration with Elizabeth Johnson (U. Toronto), Kris Onishi (McGill), Ed Smith (UMD), & Ruth Tincoff (Bucknell).
